Sixth title at Sevens for Crokes

All Sport

Kilmacud Crokes were crowned Londis All-Ireland Senior Football Sevens champions for the sixth time on home turf on Saturday evening.

A fifth minute goal from Ben Shovlin provided the kick the hosts needed in the final, before claiming a 1-11 to 1-9 win over An Riocht of Down.

It was a first title for Johnny Magee's charges since 2015, having lost finals in 2016 and 2017.

Crokes went unbeaten in the tournament, and claimed wins over Naomh Barrog (2-12 to 1-10); An Riocht (0-15 to 1-11) and Athlone (9-10 to 5-1) in the group stages.

Goals were key in their quarter-final against Killererin of Galway (3-8 to 0-11), before accounting for 2018 winners Corofin in the semi-final by 1-10 to 0-9, with Darragh Jones netting the winners goal.

In the final, Crokes delivered some stunning scores, including efforts from the wing by Dan O'Brien and Niall O'Leary.

The home-side led by 1-6 to 0-5 at half-time, with Deaglan Morgan and Ronan Campbell keeping An Riocht in touch.

The hosts showed greater accuracy throughout, in a game where they registered all of their scores from play.

Crokes goalkeeper Padraig Purcell helped ensure a double-scores lead early on the restart with his second point.

In their first final, An Riocht battled hard and grabbed an injury-time goal from Morgan to cut the gap to two points.

The Down outfit continued to cause Crokes problems as they searched for a match-winning goal.

However, O'Brien put in a well placed block late on to ensure Karl Dias lifted the Cup.

Kilmacud Crokes' Cillian O'Shea was named the Londis Player of the Tournament afterwards.
