A late Ryan Brennan goal helped Shelbourne to a 1-0 victory against Waterford at the RSC on Saturday evening.
It leaves Ian Morris's side five points clear of Finn Harps, who are in the relegation zone, although the Donegal club have played a game less. The result means Cork City are now seven points from safety, with just four games to play.
Earlier, Bray Wanderers moved five points clear at the top of the SSE Airtricity First Division table.
They beat Shamrock Rovers' second team 2-0 at Tallaght Stadium.
