England were stunned by the host nation, New Zealand, in Saturday morning's World Cup final in Auckland.

New Zealand went in as underdogs but a pivotal point in the match came early on.

Lydia Thompson was red carded for the Red Roses for a reckless tackle on record World Cup try-scorer Portia Woodman.

Despite that setback England dug in even more. Their cause helped in no small part by three tries from the brilliant Amy Cokayne.

A try from Ayesha Leti-I'ga with nine minutes remaining saw New Zealand regain a three point lead.

England had the chance to go back in front with one last line-out but with the clock in the red they lost their throw.

A record crowd of 43,759 turned out for a match for the ages as England lost their fifth final to New Zealand.
