WATCH: Protest held over empty apartments

All Q102 News

Activists want to end the sell-off of council homes.

Campaigners say Dublin City Council isn’t doing enough to bring vacant properties back on the market.

The Dublin Renters Union have held a protest outside a luxury apartment block on the south side, where the majority of units are lying empty.

Rents at the One Ballsbridge building cost up to five-thousand euro.

Peter Dooley from the Renters Union wants the government to bring-in a vacant property tax:

"The problem is, it comes from Government policy where they facilitate luxury apartments like this, which add nothing to the social fabric to the area to profit off a crisis.

"They basically pay lip service to renters needs, there was a report that said more renters in poverty because of costs, there are empty apartments here, this is a ready-made supply.

"Bring it back into the market, and it will have an impact on secure homes and driving down rents."
