Plans to tackle e-cigs to protect teens

All Q102 News

Measures announced by the Minister for Health will see advertising of vaping products banned on public transport and near schools.

There’s major concern after a review found that kids who vape are five times more likely to start smoking.

But a new law is hoping to curb that – by banning the sale of e-cigs to under 18s and removing them from vending machines.

A children’s respiratory expert is welcoming the new plans.

Paediatric respiratory consultant at CHI Crumlin Des Cox outlines the health implications for kids who vape:

There are 16,000 different flavours of vapes, such as bubblegum and gummy bears – and Professor Cox says the legislations could go one step further in tackling that.

Meanwhile, the Irish Heart Foundation has echoed those sentiments - also saying the government hasn't gone far enough to restrict the sale and advertising of e-cigarettes to protect young people from addiction to nicotine.

The Cabinet has approved the legislation which is expected before the Oireachtas early next year.
