National Children's Hospital will have CCTV capable of recognising faces

All Q102 News

It's similar to a system used in China for surveillance, and can analyse people's faces and keep up to date with people's movements within the facility.

A spokesperson for the hospital says just 3% of the cameras will have facial recognition software, and it hasn't been decided how the technology will be used.

Simon McGarr is a solicitor and Director of Data Compliance Europe - he says this isn't about planning for down the line.

"This isn't a question of future-proofing," he said.

"It won't get more legal to track children's faces in the future.  This will never be legal later, if it's not legal now.

"The appropriate form of future-proofing was to examine whether or not facial recognition cameras were appropriate to buy in the first place."
