A 53-year-old Irishman attacked before last night's Liverpool match is in a critical condition in hospital.
He was apparently assaulted outside a pub in Anfield shortly after half seven.
Witnesses say he was hit with a belt.
Two Italian men have been arrested for attempted murder.
Police are examining CCTV footage and appealing for witnesses.
