Greens want 'responsible' lead-in if public transport reduced

All Q102 News

The Greens say people need to know in advance if public transport operators plan on introducing a Sunday service during the coronavirus emergency.

It’s reported that providers like Dublin Bus and Irish Rail could scale back their offering, as people work remotely or drive during the COVID-19 outbreak.

However, a spokesperson for the Transport Department says public transport is continuing to operate, other than a limited number of commercial services.

Public transport users are asked to check operator websites for more details of any curtailed or cancelled services.

There has been a dropoff in public transport use since social distancing measures were brought in last week to halt the spread of the virus.

But Green Party Transport Spokesperson Joe O’Brien says a weekend timetable could have a major impact on communities:

"We have key people who need to get to hospitals for their jobs; more basic things like people getting to the shops for food, to the chemist for medicine.

"If we are reducing services or going to a Saturday or Sunday timetable, it needs to be preceded by a very clear public information campaign so that, if it's viable for people to adjust their behaviour around it, so that can be done."
