Government defers RIC commemoration event

All Q102 News

The government has backed down in it's plans to hold a commemoration of the Royal Irish Constabulary and Dublin Metropolitan Police.

Controversy over the event, which was due to take place later this month in Dublin Castle, has forced a u-turn.

Justice Minister Charlie Flanagan says given the disappointing response to the event it will now be deferred.

A number of ministers and politicians had pledged to boycott the event.

The Justice Minister says he hopes to have an alternative commemoration in the months ahead.
