A human resources expert says employers could lose workers if they reduce pay for those working from home.
Google is trialling a new internal 'pay calculator' which shows a worker what they will be paid working remotely in different areas.
Pay cuts would be implemented in places where the cost of living is lower.
Managing director of the HR suite Caroline Reidy says this could lead to staff issues.
"I think it's going to disadvantage the employers that are going to be first off the mark to consider it," she said.
"As there's talk of returning to the office here in Ireland in September, that people are starting to say 'well actually if I have to come back fully, I'm not going to be happy about that, and I'm going to look for another job."
